Since a picture is worth a thousand words the blog this week is visual. The majority are of our visit with the Pope students this week. They were wonderful teachers! Also, Mrs. Dean came into our math class and students programmed the Spheros, robots, to make rectangles. After the robots made the shape, students measured the length of the sides, and then calculated the perimeter of the figure. Thanks, Mrs. Dean! Next week we begin a study of geometry, so it was a great introduction for us.
Next week we have an Invention Convention Kick Off on Monday with Mrs. Bates and Mrs. Pascual, so look for more to come on that later! We will also celebrate Exceptional Children's Week with special visitors on Thursday. Enjoy the pictures!

Lucky me, to work in a wonderful place where our parents continually show their appreciation. Thank you so much for all of the cards, flowers, sweet treats and lunch! I truly feel appreciated and I especially thank you for that. Today has been a fun St. Patrick's Day with a visit to our book buddies to help them add Lucky Charms and a visit from Elliott's mom and their two month old chickens.
REMINDERS: -The deadline for ordering Field Day Wear is March 24th. -Have your child wear the red, Tritt tshirt on Monday for our in-school field trip with the visiting Pope students. -Report cards come home on Thursday. NEXT WEEK: Reading: The focus will be on learning to find answers in text, determine main ideas, and then write constructed responses to support thinking. Writing: The students are having fun creating their books about the animal they researched. Each book will contain 5 facts about the animal and 5 nonfiction conventions. Hopefully, we will finish these next week. Math: We will continue to practice solving 2 step word problems and also learn how to find the perimeter of a polygon. Social Studies and Science: We will study Eleanor Roosevelt and then begin locating the major rivers of the United States. My social studies class has ILC on Monday. Again, thanks for a great teacher appreciation week and have a good weekend! Thank you to everyone for dropping off your child and letting them walk to school last Wednesday. Our class was the winning third grade class and was in a 3 way tie for having the most walkers at Tritt! We had almost 100%. What a great way to start our day and now the students have won an extra recess supervised by Dr. Patterson or Mrs. Keesling.
REMINDERS: Every child should take a reading test on a novel they are reading by the end of next week. That is the end of the 3rd nine weeks. Report cards come home on March 23rd. NEXT WEEK: Reading - On Monday at 9 we will take the RI reading test in the computer lab to assess progress in reading comprehension. You will see your child's new, current lexile on the report card. The lesson in the Common Core book will teach/guide the children on how to read Historical Texts. We work on these lessons in small guided reading groups. Students that are not in a group are reading independently or working on vocabulary activities. Ask them how many times they've used one of our new words or found a word in their reading. We're keeping tallies to encourage usage of the words. The homework in that book will come home on Wednesday and be due on Friday. Writing - The students will continue to create a book about the animal they researched. Some students are writing from the point of view of the animal and creating a diary while others are writing a nonfiction book. All books will include 5 facts about the animal and 5 nonfiction conventions. They will also learn about similes and have to include one in their book. Math - It is time to put everything together as we work on 2-step problem solving with problems that include any of the 4 operations. Social Studies - Hopefully, your child will come home telling you all about FDR as we investigate our next American hero. Have a great weekend! Have you ever wondered about the different plants and animals that live in GA? Ask your child to tell you a few and see if they remember which region they live. Oh, and have them name the regions - Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Swamps and Marshes, and the Atlantic Ocean. We have traveled to every region, studied its climate, soil type, animals and plants. The students are almost finished making a flipbook that I'm using as an assessment instead of a test. Next week Mrs. Dean is coming and students will use the laptops to create an infographic about their favorite region. Not sure what an infographic is - ask your child - they made one in computer lab with Mrs. Pascual and we studied them in our Storyworks, Jr. magazine.
REMINDERS: Picture Day is Tuesday, March 7. Even if you aren't ordering pictures we will have our class picture taken. Each child should take a reading test on a novel of his/her choice by March 17. This Wednesday, March 8 is WALK(OR RIDE YOUR BIKE) TO SCHOOL DAY! I'll be walking from the Chimney Springs Clubhouse. Students may be dropped off there or the YMCA, but parents are invited to walk, too. LET'S WIN THE CLASS CONTEST AND HAVE EVERYONE WALK! NEXT WEEK: Reading - We are concentrating on writing responses to text, writing conclusions to stories, and writing extended responses that compare 2 different articles. Yes, there is a lot of writing during reading for the next month. Students are learning to make sure and include a topic sentence, details from the text that prove their answer and a concluding sentence. Writing - Research reports are almost finished and will be published next week. Then the fun begins as students begin writing their own nonfiction book based on the information from their report. You'll get to read these at our author's celebration in May. Math - We will finish our study of measuring with grams, kilograms, milliliters, and liters. Students should be familiar with the terms mass and volume. Then we'll learn how to analyze 2-step word problems in all 4 operations. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you check your child's homework each night for immediate feedback! Also, the time test will include the 9s. Call those facts out continually, please! Science/Social Studies - On Monday we go to the ILC. Then we'll have our final project with Mrs. Dean on regions and begin learning about our next American hero Franklin D. Roosevelt. Have a great weekend! |
