Have you ever wondered about the different plants and animals that live in GA? Ask your child to tell you a few and see if they remember which region they live. Oh, and have them name the regions - Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Swamps and Marshes, and the Atlantic Ocean. We have traveled to every region, studied its climate, soil type, animals and plants. The students are almost finished making a flipbook that I'm using as an assessment instead of a test. Next week Mrs. Dean is coming and students will use the laptops to create an infographic about their favorite region. Not sure what an infographic is - ask your child - they made one in computer lab with Mrs. Pascual and we studied them in our Storyworks, Jr. magazine.
REMINDERS: Picture Day is Tuesday, March 7. Even if you aren't ordering pictures we will have our class picture taken. Each child should take a reading test on a novel of his/her choice by March 17. This Wednesday, March 8 is WALK(OR RIDE YOUR BIKE) TO SCHOOL DAY! I'll be walking from the Chimney Springs Clubhouse. Students may be dropped off there or the YMCA, but parents are invited to walk, too. LET'S WIN THE CLASS CONTEST AND HAVE EVERYONE WALK! NEXT WEEK: Reading - We are concentrating on writing responses to text, writing conclusions to stories, and writing extended responses that compare 2 different articles. Yes, there is a lot of writing during reading for the next month. Students are learning to make sure and include a topic sentence, details from the text that prove their answer and a concluding sentence. Writing - Research reports are almost finished and will be published next week. Then the fun begins as students begin writing their own nonfiction book based on the information from their report. You'll get to read these at our author's celebration in May. Math - We will finish our study of measuring with grams, kilograms, milliliters, and liters. Students should be familiar with the terms mass and volume. Then we'll learn how to analyze 2-step word problems in all 4 operations. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you check your child's homework each night for immediate feedback! Also, the time test will include the 9s. Call those facts out continually, please! Science/Social Studies - On Monday we go to the ILC. Then we'll have our final project with Mrs. Dean on regions and begin learning about our next American hero Franklin D. Roosevelt. Have a great weekend!
