Thank you to the moms who came in and played math games this morning. I think Math with Parents was a big success. One of the boys asked me, "Why did we just do that?" I asked him if he practiced his math skills "yes" and if he had fun "yes". "Ahhh", he said as the answer dawned on him. It is becoming apparent that quite a few students are a little rusty with their math facts. Please practice those at home, in the car, or anywhere for at least 5-10 min. a day. That will make a huge difference in their abilities to master 3 digit addition and subtraction.
Reminders: Mark your calendars for Sept. 20 at 5:00 for the Tritt vs. Mt. Bethel faculty kickball game. Your child brought home a flyer about the event and the important charity that the proceeds will support. I will be there as a "cheerleader"(no laughing), so come support our team, a great organization, and have some fun! Gifted Eligibility Process Informational Meeting Tritt’s Target Team will hold our annual Gifted Eligibility Process Informational Meeting on Thursday, September 1st, at 6:00 p.m. in the ILC. We will explain Cobb County’s eligibility process and criteria for the gifted program. If you are wondering about this process and how it relates to your child or have specific questions, please plan to join us on September 1st! Next Week: Reader's Workshop - students will continue to learn new reading strategies(finding the main idea and supporting details), as they are also introduced to the different types of traditional literature. We will use folktales, fairy tables, and fables to discover the main idea and then prove it with details from the text. Writer's Workshop:- There are no parent journals this weekend because the class really wanted to write their personal narratives today. It is wonderful how excited they are about writing them. Ask your child the small moment they are writing about. They will continue to write those next week, while they also learn sentence fluency - good writers use complete sentences, vary the length of their sentences, include important details in their sentences, and vary the beginnings of their sentences. Math - they will finish practicing the addition strategies and begin learning strategies that help with subtraction. Science/Social Studies - we will have our first gardening lesson with Mrs. Stone on Wed. during our time. Our class is going with Mrs. Love's class, so we will all be together. We will continue our study of rocks/minerals and government. On our STEM showcase day on Wed. students will be creating a "fossil excavator"! You can ask them all about it Wed. after school. Have a great weekend!

We've had another great week in room 100. Ask your child about the reading salad we made and if reading requires more reading of the words or thinking about what we read. The real excitement was the day they received their 1/2 notebooks. These are just composition books cut in 1/2 by a great machine at Office Depot. After reading Amelia's Notebook we discussed how she used her notebook to journal all her ideas, feelings, and memories and writer's often use these to gather ideas for their writing pieces. Their faces were so excited and precious when they realized they were getting their own notebooks to use for journaling and doodling. This concludes our study on how writers gather ideas: 1-from their hearts (they made a map of their hearts filled with things they love); 2-from what they know (they made a hot topic list to include everything they know anything about); 3- from their observations (they took a walk through the nature nook recording all the nature they observed with their senses); 4-from their observations of what's going around them and their thoughts, feelings, and memories (we read Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street and Amelia's Notebook and they have had several times to journal). Now it time for them to turn into writers!
Reminders: -Book orders are due by Wednesday. Your child brought home the flyer with a sticker that is our class code. After you use that once you won't have to remember it again. -We would LOVE to have some DUDES volunteer to help us for our STEM Challenge day on Aug. 31 anytime from 8:15-11:00. Thanks! -If you want to volunteer for any of the Math with Parents dates I sent out, then email me by Monday. -Picture day is Wednesday. -Check out the Tritt website and updates for the great week the counselors have planned for next week! Next week: In reader's workshop the students will continue to practice using the strategy Check for Understanding - when they stop every few pages and ask themselves the 5 W questions - who, what when, where, and why. In writer's workshop they will begin writing their first personal narrative. After they pick the event they want to write about they will tell their writing buddy all the details. Children write better if they have a chance to verbalize all of their thoughts first. Hopefully, this will help them feel excited about their piece. In math we will begin reviewing the addition strategies and use them to add 3 digit numbers. In science/social studies we will continue to study rocks/minerals and introduce democracy. Have a great weekend! For two weeks the students and I have been working on building our new classroom community. Now that the adults have come together at Open House I feel that our community is complete. It was wonderful to start putting parents' faces with the students and now that you've heard our classroom expectations and goals we are all on the same page working together for 22 incredible children.
Those 22 children are quite the actors. Last week they read their first reader's theater to practice fluency in reading. Ask them about the part they had in the play that was about Alice - a little girl who doesn't like to read because she only reads the words. The other characters - the Rabbit, the Artist, the Fortune Teller and the Owl teach her about reading strategies that will help her comprehend what she reads and escape the Witch, Read No More. Hopefully, your child can explain these strategies and how they helped Alice. Reminders: As mentioned at Open House please initial your child's planner each night IF they read the 20-25 minutes. If it difficult for them to attend for that long then break it into 2 sessions trying to build their stamina each month. The goal is that by the end of the year they will be engaged in their book enough to sit and read for 25-30 min. Check math homework with your child each night. Immediate feedback is the most effective. This Week: Math - rounding 2 and 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 and introduction of Number Talks Reading - mini lessons focus - how to choose a Good Fit book, what is Real Reading, the introduction of the CAFE board, and the first strategies - fluency and check for understanding Writing - continue to explore where writers gather their ideas - Science - rocks and minerals STEM - group planning and designing a new Olympic logo that still integrates the 5 significant colors ILC - our first visit is Monday and students will be checking out books Have a great weekend! What a great first week back we had! Everyone in our class is being kind and respectful to each other and working together very well. If you're looking for topics to ask your child about be sure to ask about our the author we are reading, Bill Peet. Students made hilarious Wingdingdillys that they brought home on Thursday. Your child should be able to retell some of the story about how a dog wants to be a horse, but is turned into a Wingdingdilly. See if they can remember at least 3 details to tell you. Then they can explain the creature they created using wonderful imaginations.
REMINDERS: - Open House is this Thursday, August 11 at 6:00. I hope to see you all! It is a great opportunity to hear third grade expectations, procedures, schedules and a chance for me to answer some of your questions. It definitely helps us all be on the same page and work as a team. Do remember it is for parents only, thanks. - I'm still missing a few inclement weather forms(blue) and the Receipt of the Parent Information Guide that was in your Cobb County Folder. -This will be explained on Thursday night, but please initial your :child's planner each night IF they read the 20/25 minutes required for homework. THIS WEEK: Math: We will review, explore, and learn the importance of place value. Key vocabulary words are digit, place, and value. Students need to know the difference in place and value. Look for a little math homework each night. Reading: We will begin Reader's Workshop and the students will work on increasing their reading stamina and practice the first strategy - check for understanding. Writing: We will begin Writer's Workshop, explore where writers' gather their ideas. and the steps of the writing process. Social Studies/STEM: It will be a perfect week to begin our study of ancient Greece and how we got the Olympics, democracy, pottery, and architecture from them. (Yes, that is a third grade standard.) Students also need to know how to locate Greece on a map. As we launch into this study we will incorporate a STEM activity they can tell you about at the end of the week. Have a great weekend! |
