Our STEM Day last Wednesday was a great success! Students were fossil excavators as they designed a device that could fit in a 1 ft. crevice, travel 3 ft. high, and hold as many fossils as possible. It was obvious from the beginning that these students have worked in cooperative groups for several years now. The critical thinking skills were exciting to watch as students planned, shared ideas, discussed options and created their devices. After testing their devices, groups had an opportunity to improve and try again. Ask your child how many "fossils" their group excavated and how they made their device. REMINDERS: - Testing begins next Tuesday through the following Wednesday. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep, eats a nutritious breakfast, and brings a healthy snack. -Also, please make sure your child knows his/her address! Mrs. Edwards did an activity last week and many students didn't know theirs. For their safety practice this often. - SUPPORT THE RALLY FOUNDATION and come out to the Tritt/Mt. Bethel kickball game!!! The details are in the previous post. We are going to have a GREAT time and raise money for an important charity. I look forward to cheering on our team. NEXT WEEK: Math: We are finishing 3 digit addition/subtraction (for now). I've also introduced the template we use for problem solving. We will use this format throughout the year as students learn how to tackle word problems. Next week we will have fun introducing multiplication with arrays and repeated addition. Because of testing math will be at the end of the day. Reading and Writing: As the students learned how to identify the main idea and supporting details of texts, they've heard some wonderful mentor texts. Ask them to tell you about the main ideas of Christina Katarina and the Time She Quit the Family and Wilford Gordon MacDonald Partridge. Next week we wlll practice the new strategy of extending vocabulary. Our new read aloud Donovan's Word Jar is about a little boy who collects words. Students will become word collectors as they identify new vocabulary and interesting words in their reading and then record them on their word collector charts which they will keep in their reading notebooks. This dovetails perfectly with our next writing revision lessons - adding new and interesting words to your writing. Science/Social Studies - after completing their science post test tomorrow the class will have fun making the three types of rocks out of Starbursts. In Social Studies we began our study of map terms - compass rose, equator, prime meridian, longitude, and latitude and this will continue into next week. I hope everyone had a great Labor Day and has a super weekend!
