This week started out a little crazy with the Great Eclipse, but settled down nicely and was quite productive. I hope everyone enjoyed their viewing experience. It was truly a sight to see.
Every week I'm going to post some questions you can ask your child that are based on what we've studied all week. Hopefully, this will start some meaningful conversations about what they are learning. Questions to Ask Your Child: - What is a CAFE board and how do you use it in reading? What do the letters stand for? (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expand vocabulary) -What is the Check for Understanding strategy? Can you model it for me when you read tonight? (They should stop every few pages or at the end of the chapter and ask who, what, when, where, why to see if they understood what they just read. -What is happening in James and the Giant Peach? REMINDERS: - Wednesday is Early Release. Lunch is at 11:30 that day, but we will still have snack. They just won't need as much. -Please return the Performing Arts permission slip that came home this week. Even if you can't make the donation I still need the slip signed and returned, so your child can participate. - BE INVESTED in your child's education and support the foundation! NEXT WEEK: Math - We will move from the addition strategies and on to the subtraction strategies. Learning different ways to solve a problem helps students understand (not just memorize) what they are doing. Students need to practice their addition facts. While watching them work it is evident many have forgotten their basic facts. Reading - Students will learn how using their prior knowledge and personal experiences will help them engage and make connections while they read. Writing - The class will continue to write personal narratives emphasizing that they should use a storyteller's voice and not a news reporter's. They are learning to tell a story bit by bit with action, dialogue and descriptive words. Science - This week students used Professor Peabody's Scientific Process Skills to observe, order, and classify rocks and minerals. We will continue our study of rocks and minerals this week. We will also have phase 1 of a STEM project that will be completed the following week. Look for fun pictures of that in progress in 2 weeks. Have a great weekend.

Thank you to everyone who made time in their busy schedules to come to Open House last night to stay invested in your child's education. I am fortunate so many parents could make it and look forward to working with all of you as we work together for your children.
I couldn't resist taking a few pictures today as the students had a place value celebration after their first math assessment. The challenge on the board was to create a free standing structure with a certain number of 100s, 10s, and ones. The first round not all the groups were able to make a structure that didn't fall down, so they rotated and took a look at all of the successful buildings. Visuals are wonderful and the 2nd round we had 100% success. Celebrate your child's success with them tonight! We certainly have an All Star Class this year. What a great first week for everyone - making new friends, hearing/reading lots of great stories, learning routines/procedures, giving compliments in our morning meeting, learning how to use SeeSaw with Mrs. Dean and having a first time in the loft. Our new Tritt students fit in great. I told them in our morning meeting they are not new any more - they are already true Tritt Tigers! Make sure and ask your child about the hilarious Bill Peet books we read and look in their take home folders for their first finished projects. Please take the time to look at their work and ask them to explain it to you - Jethro and Joel and the Wingdingdilly.
REMINDERS: -Open House is this Thursday, Aug. 10. It begins with PTA at 6:00. You will come to our classroom AFTER the meeting. Remember this is ADULTS ONLY. I look forward to seeing you and sharing many of the great things we'll be doing in our class, procedures, and expectations. -Become invested in the Foundation! The support that Mrs. Pascual, in the computer lab, and Mr. Giunta, in the science lab, provide both students and teachers is immeasurable. Please help us make sure we are able to continue that support. NEXT WEEK: We will begin our guided math groups/rotations and students will be reviewing place value to the thousands. They will have lessons on how and why to pick the just right books for them, as well as, meet with me one-on-one, so we can discuss their reading life and set goals for them. In writing they are working on something special for you to see at Open House, so more on that later! Students will also be presented with their first STEM Challenge. You'll also see those results at Open House! Hope you can make it. Hope you have a great weekend! |
