Congratulations to everyone for such a successful fund raiser and Tritt Tiger Dash! I'm so proud of our class. They did such a great job cheering on the other classes that we won the Kindness Award.
They also had a great math lesson on Friday, thanks to Mrs. Dean and technology. They used the Sphero SPRK+ robots to practice multiplication. The repeated addition strategy helped them to write a program which made the robot roll a certain amount of inches, and they used a loop to repeat the program. How engaging! If your child has me for math be sure and ask them how they did this. REMINDERS: - Our field trip to Tellus is on Thursday. 1. Students should wear their red Tritt shirts. 2. Each child may bring NO MORE than $5.00 and each child is responsible for keeping up with his money. There are many items in the gift shop under $5.00. 3. If you checked that your child is bringing her own lunch please make sure it is in a disposable container and has his name on it. -Since we met our 4th goal electronics day is this Friday. We will still have math and reading, but the rest of the day is reserved for electronics fun. Students may bring 1-2 electronic games, toys, etc. Please label them with names!! Neither Tritt nor I are responsible for damaged or lost items. There are I Pads in the room for any student that doesn't bring anything. NEXT WEEK: Math- We will add the 4s to our Friday time test. Students will also continue to learn how to multiply larger numbers using the distributive property. Reading - Now that the students know how to use a character's actions and dialogue to determine their traits they will learn how to write about it. They will use sentence stems such as: - In the book Opal _______, so I know that she is__responsible. - The text states that Opal ___________, so I can determine that she is ____________. - When Opal said, "_____" that told me she is ___________. Using evidence from the text to prove your thinking is a huge third grade skill that we will work on all year. Writing: Integrating what they are learning in reading students will learn to use and punctuate dialogue to help develop the characters in their Monster Playhouse fictional narratives. They will finish and publish these stories this week. After I read them and give the students a glow and a grow they will bring home their stories for your enjoyment. Science: In the ILC, the science lab and the classroom students will investigate fossils learning about the different types and how they are formed. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Welcome to our new student, Mason White, moving here from Illinois. The students have been amazing in welcoming him and helping him with our routines. There is a lot to learn at a new school and they are eager to help him.
Google Earth was a great tool this week as we used it to locate the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. Students were able to see how we travel west to arrive in the Rockies and east to head back to the Appalachian. We even found Mason's old school! Next week students will use the IPads to take a picture of the US and then use Doodle Buddy to draw in the mountain ranges. Much more fun then the old paper and pencil way! Our first auction was a big success! Thank you for sending in all the goodies. REMINDERS: - Book reports are due next Friday, Oct. 28. Each student will have 2-5 min. to present their book. - MONDAY is our next collection day for the Tritt Tiger Dash. I hope you will use the weekend to further support our fundraiser. One more goal to make! - The dash is this Friday, Oct. 28. Third grade's time is 10-10:45. Come out and cheer on The Benson's Bolts. -Screen on the Green is this Sat. night. Come enjoy some family fun sponsored by our PTA. NEXT WEEK: Reading - We will identify a character's traits and how his/her actions helped us know this about our character. Students have to cite evidence (examples) from the text to prove their thinking. We will also have a visit from our Book Buddies on Thursday. Math - We will continue to review the Identity, Zero, Commutative, and Associative Properties, as well as, introduce the Distributive Property. Don't worry, if you've forgotten what those are, the homework will have directions at the top or the students will bring home their journals (which have each one defined). Our next multiplication fact test is on Thursday and we will add the 3s. Science - Students will explore fossils learning what they are, the different types, and how they are formed. Writing - The Monster Playhouse, fictional narratives are developing nicely. The characters (monsters) are developed, the setting is planned and now it is time for them to write the story. I can't wait to see where their imaginations take them. Ask your children to tell you their stories so far. Talking about a story before writing it helps students organize their ideas. It was nice meeting with you all, but I'll be glad to have the kids back all day next week! I hope after the Tritt Tiger Dash Kick Off your child is excited about collecting donations to support our PTA in the great projects it has planned! Check out our sign to see what our class earns every time we meet a goal. Our first goal is $550, second goal $1100, third goal $1650, and fourth goal $2200 - which is the equivalent of $100 per child. Thank you for helping in any way you can. THE FIRST collection day is THIS MONDAY - Oct. 17. We all had a great time with Mrs. Dean on Thursday while she taught us how to use Flick. Each student had an IPad. They used DoodleBuddy to record some character traits that Opal's dad in Because of Winn Dixie has and some evidence from the text to prove it. Ask your child about the word(s) they chose to use to describe the Preacher, Opal's dad and why! Then each student used Flick to "flick" their answer to my IPAD which was mirrored on to our screen thanks to our Apple TV. Talk about 100% engagement. REMINDERS: -Next week is conference week with 12:30 dismissal and a 11:35 lunch time. We will still eat a morning snack. Please be prompt for your conference and I will also stay on schedule so that we honor everyone's time. I look forward to seeing you. - Please read the blue paper that came home describing our first auction this Friday, Oct. 21. -PLEASE also read the emails from the PTA about the piece of the upcoming election that concerns our schools. - Book reports are due Oct. 28 - the same day as our dash! - This week is BOOK FAIR week. I've posted a class wish list if you'd like to donate a book to our room. NEXT WEEK: Math - It is time to start memorizing those math facts. We'll start slow with a test on Thursday with the 0, 1, and 2 tables. Then we will add the 3s the next week. So start practicing - in the car, waiting for events, and every night. This week we will also study the multiplication properties O property, Identity Property (1s), and the Associative Property. Reading - We will continue to read Because of Winn Dixie both as a read aloud and in small groups to study the character's actions and dialogue, so we can determine the character's traits. Understanding our character helps us to engage with and comprehend the story more completely. Writer's Workshop - We are going to have some fun this week beginning our first fictional narrative. Students will develop their own characters using the traits we are learning about in reading. They will make a Monster's Playhouse to use as the setting and a prewriting activity. Social Studies - We will still switch this week, but just for 30 min. My class will work on learning the two major mountain ranges in the US. I hope you enjoy this beautiful weekend with your family! Thanks to the Foundation for our new Apple TV! The students and I will now be able to share everything from the IPads on to our ActivBoard. I'm very excited about all the possibilities. Mrs. Dean is coming to our room next week to teach us how to use the app Flick to share ideas. It is a great way to increase student engagement! Thanks for your support of the foundation, so we have this great resource.
Thanks, too, for helping your child walk to school this week! We had 82% of the children walk! What a great way to start the day. REMINDERS: Permission Slips for our field trip to the Tellus Museum will come home soon. Please return those as soon as you can. Also coming home today are directions for an October book report due Oct. 28. Students will have a chance to look for their mystery book at school. Please check with them to make sure they have one and get started reading right away. Next Week: Reading - We are beginning our novel study Because of Winn Dixie. I will read it during our read aloud and then we will use the chapters in our shared reading lessons. The first lessons will help students identify a character's trait by what they say, their feelings, and their actions. Writing - We will continue to learn about nouns and pronouns and have fun using the laptops to type the narratives. Look forward to seeing them in the hallway during conferences. Math - Exploring division will be the main focus this week. Students will learn several strategies - repeated subtraction, number line, and fact families to help them thoroughly understand the concept. Social Studies - It's time for some economics as students learn about consumers, producers, goods, and services. I hope you all have a great weekend! |
