Thank you Mrs. Carstens! The students wrote wonderful Haiku during her great lesson on Monday. She lived in Japan for three years and we all enjoyed her pictures and instruction. You should look forward to reading them during our Poetry Coffeehouse.
MAKE sure to check out See Saw today for a few clips from our great Arts in Education Day. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this such a great day. The students are fortunate to participate in all these experiences. QUESTIONS TO ASK: Who was your favorite artist today? Why did you like them? REMEMBER: *Invention Convention Projects are due on Monday. I can't wait to see all of the presentations. Students will stand in front of the class with their invention and present their PowerPoint presentations. Then the class will vote on the top 3 that progress to the school wide competition. *Our field trip to the Recycling Center is May 8. Students should wear their grey STEAM shirts and CLOSED TOE tennis shoes. *NEXT WEEK: Math - we will focus on addition and subtraction in the thousands. Language Arts - Students will be studying poems, poets, and learning how to infer meaning from poems. They will also be poets as they continue to create a variety of poems for their poetry books. Science - They will begin exploring heat - different ways it is produced and its effect on objects. Social Studies - Students will learn about the different colonies established and hardships they faced. Testing is over, but we still have lots to learn! Enjoy your weekend!

Your children worked hard this week and I'm proud of them. I think the morning incentive treats, extra compliments in the bucket and extra recess made the experience more tolerable. I also think they were proud to show off all of their knowledge! They had a nice break this morning. Each STEAM group is working on a public service announcement video to show to the kindergarten classes that should encourage them to recycle and to do it correctly. When they are finished our class will view them and vote on their favorite. That one will appear on the announcements. I was able to post a few early stage rehearsals this morning, but not all. You will be able to see all the finished products at some point. We also had a fun visit with our STEAM buddies where they showed us their STEAM habitat projects!
QUESTIONS TO ASK: What is your group's PSA? What is the slogan? How did the read aloud Tale of Desperaux end? What was your favorite part? How did kindness save the day? What is one item you would measure with grams, kilograms? REMEMBER: *ALL invention convention projects and PowerPoint presentations are due Monday, April 29. * The NEW DATE for our Poetry Coffeehouse is May 20th from 9:15-10. *Return the permission slip that went home on Thursday. Students receive bonus bucks IF I have them by Monday. There is NO cost. Our trip is on Wednesday, May 8 from 9-12:15. Students should wear their grey STEAM shirts and Closed Toed Tennis Shoes. *Math Milestone testing is next Wednesday and Thursday - remember to make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast, gets a good night's sleep, and has a stress free morning. *The Art Show is next Thursday night - refer to the email sent yesterday. NEXT WEEK: We will review for math - A LOT -; write lots of poetry (on Monday ask your child who the surprise guest poetry teacher was); have a visit to the ILC to work on Invention Convention PowerPoints and end the week with ARTS IN EDUCATION DAY! One of my favorite days at Tritt! I hope you have a Happy Easter, Happy Passover, or just a wonderful family filled weekend! Thank you for the extra effort reviewing the writing with your child at night. The students are ready! Please remember that ELA testing is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week. We will test in our room with laptops and will begin PROMPTLY at 8:00. Please make sure your child is here on time those days. Students are not allowed to enter the room after testing has begun. IT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA to make sure your child is here by 7:35 ish so he/she can go out for the brain run/walk. Research strongly supports that getting that blood flowing will help those brains! Students will also receive a snack after the run to eat before testing begins. STILL send in a daily snack for them to eat after testing.
I have told the class IF they ALL use scratch paper to plan their writing piece first and use scratch paper to solve math problems they will earn a pizza party! Stay tuned… QUESTIONS TO ASK: What do you read first that will also help you determine the main idea of a passage? Where does poetry hide? How do you make a word possessive? What are quotation marks for? REMEMBER: *Students need a good breakfast, good night’s sleep, and stress free morning before testing. *Invention Convention projects with completed PowerPoint presentations are due Monday, April 29. Working on the project will be the only homework on the nights before testing. *Send in any extra Legos for the Tritt STEAM Room. Student leadership is weighing the Legos and recording it on a graph in the hallway. We don't have any yet, so if you can help, thanks! *The room moms sent an email about volunteering for field day. I hope some of you can help. NEXT WEEK - Reviewing, testing, and writing poetry! They also have a lesson in the LLC with Mrs. Bates about reference materials, a guidance lesson with Mrs. Grindstaff and next Friday is a STEAM morning - so there is some fun in there, too! The class also filled up the compliment bucket AGAIN and voted to have an extra recess. Next week after testing will be a perfect time for that! Have a great weekend! Happy Monday! We are off to Pope today and so excited. Be sure to ask your child tonight what he/she learned and experienced. Thanks for sending them in their gray shirts. We will board the bus immediately after art.
REMEMBER: Next week is Spring Break! *Invention Convention projects are due April 29. Students are creating their PowerPoint presentation in the computer lab, but the project is made at home. BE SURE to take pictures throughout the build for the PowerPoint. *This quarter students are assessed on knowledge of multiplication facts on the report card, so KEEP PRACTICING! THIS WEEK: Language Arts: They love Peter Pan and will finish it this week.It has been a wonderful resource to examine an author's craft and infer important points in a story. Students will also review how to read one genre and then write about the text using another genre. For example, they might read a narrative and then write an informational piece using its topic - or read an informational and write an opinion piece on that topic, etc. Math: This week and the week we return we will focus on problem solving, adding and subtracting 4 digit numbers, and reviewing all the standards they've learned this year. Science: The class is creating a big book titled Georgia A to Z as a culminating project for their study of the regions of Georgia. We will share this with our STEAM Buddies soon. Have a great week! I hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful weekend. We had fun in Nashville celebrating my grandson, Benson's third birthday! On Friday the students had the pleasure of a class with Mrs. Yates. She did a fabulous job of explaining what taking the Milestones online will be like this year. They learned about the different tools and how to maneuver through the pages. It was MUCH easier than I thought. The students are going to do great! We will go back to the lab a couple of times to practice before the test. Meanwhile, in the classroom we will review all the math skills learned this year, continue to learn reading strategies and how to write constructed responses that explain how they solved the problem. I will NOT be mentioning testing much until closer to the date. It does NOT need to become our focus, so please don't at home either. We will continue to have fun while learning. They'll be getting ready and not even know it!
QUESTIONS TO ASK: What tool did you find the most helpful on Friday? Will you use the sticky note tool on the test? (no) How many sides does a quadrilateral have? Can you name them? (square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid). REMEMBER: *Students should know what they are creating for the Invention Convention by Tuesday of this week. * Report cards go live on Friday at 2:00. Make sure you know how to sign in to your account. If not the front office can help you. *On Monday March 25 we will go to Pope on a field trip. Make sure your child brings a bigger snack that day. We will eat snack before we go to specials at 8 and then eat lunch at the regular time. NEXT WEEK: Math - As well as reviewing math skills from the year we will focus on problem solving. Students should be able to determine whether to add, subtract, multiply, or divide and solve a 2-step word problem. They also need to be practicing that 9s table! Language Arts: In reading workshop we will continue to analyze different crafts an author uses with Peter Pan. Tomorrow students will enjoy a fun presentation teaching idioms in a hilarious way. (Your performing arts money at work - thank you!) In Writing Workshop they will start fine tuning their ability to respond to reading questions and write their final opinion piece. Science - They will study the Piedmont Region, Coastal Plains, and the class will begin making our A to Z through Georgia book. I hope the students enjoyed all the rotations last week. They learned about a different explorer with each third grade teacher. It is a fun way for them to have a more in depth experience about each one. Make sure and ask about your child's favorite explorer and see if they can tell you a few facts.
OTHER QUESTIONS TO ASK: What does Point of View mean? What pronouns do you use if you are writing from your own point of view? How do you find the Perimeter of an object? The area? REMEMBER: * Third grade parents are invited to come watch STEAM in action this Wed., March 13 from 8-9:30. We are in specials until 9, but you are welcome to see other grade levels until then. *Wednesday is also Early Release. Students are dismissed at 12:30. *Our Auction is THIS Friday. Only one child has sent in an item so far. Thanks for getting those in this week! *Your child should be thinking about what problem they want to solve for Invention Convention. They will draw a prototype in ILC before Spring Break. THIS WEEK: Math - Geometry - students explore the attributes of flat shapes and learn LOTS of new vocabulary like - polygon, parallel, quadrilateral, intersecting, angle, vertex, and the names of the shapes. Your child should be practicing 9's now! We are close to the finish line! Make sure your child is with us. Language Arts - We will continue our book study of Peter Pan. Students are learning to analyze a character's actions to determine their motivation. Our writing time will be spent practicing writing responses to reading and reviewing the grammar studied this quarter such as comparative/superlative adjectives and conjunctions. Social Studies - Henry Hudson was the explorer I taught in the rotations, so I will teach that lesson to our class this week. Science - As well as a STEAM morning, students will continue to travel the different regions of GA. This week we will also take third quarter RI, have a Post Writing for Opinion, Guidance lesson and have a class taught by Mrs. Yates on using the tools on the computer to take Milestones. Whew! Have a great week! Thanks for sending in all the sleeping bags, pillows, etc. for RAD day today. Make sure and check out the picture on SeeSaw from before school this morning. That's the only picture we managed because it was a busy day. After math with parents ( and yummy Dr. Seuss cupcakes from Mrs. Cogbill) -students headed off to build monuments with their STEAM buddies and to the Book Fair Preview. They were excited when they finally had time to settle in and read awhile on their sleeping bags again. It gave me a great chance to meet with individual students and help them improve their reading assessments. I will meet with each child before next week's end.
QUESTIONS TO ASK: When you are reading with your child sometime ask them to model how to infer a character's trait, a word meaning, or an important message. About how much does a paper clip weigh? A baseball bat? A Harry Potter book? A dollar bill? About how much liquid is a drop of water? A filled average size water bottle? REMEMBER: *Next week is book fair week. Students may shop before school if they bring money. Since I'm retiring and we have SO many books in our class, I did not fill out the form for classroom donations. Instead please buy a book and donate it to LaBelle Elem.(there will be a box by the check out). Those teachers don't have the resources we have here at Tritt. Thanks!! *There is not a parent journal this week. * Blue problem solving sheets for Invention Convention are due Monday. *Opinion speeches are next week. *The next auction is March 15! NEXT WEEK: Math - Students will learn to measure the perimeter of objects and when this would be necessary. They should also be practicing their 8s tables! Language Arts - Students will be finishing their opinion pieces and typing them in the computer lab. In reading we will focus on Point of View and how it effects people's opinions. We will also have fun listening to all of the speeches! Social Studies - It will be a fun week as students rotate through each third grade teacher's class learning about a different explorer in each class. Rotations will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Have a great weekend! Amy Loved and appreciated! That's how I feel after a wonderful week! Thank you for all the flowers, cards, treats, coffees, the breakfast, and the lunch. Not to mention the breakfast and lunch provided by the PTA. I am definitely spoiled, but mostly because of the continued support you offer as we work together to support your child.
This week was also Exceptional Children's Week. The PTA arranged for 2 speakers from the KylePeasefoundation to speak to third grade. Kyle's brother and a young man with cerebral palsy shared how these exceptional people are also athletes even though they may look and talk differently. Check out the website to learn more about these incredible young people and ask your child about the computer he used to speak for him. QUESTIONS TO ASK: What was your favorite part of Mr. Popper's Penguins? What has your STEAM group decided to do for its Public Service Announcement? What are three ways a text might be organized? (sequence, cause and effect, and compare/contrast) REMEMBER: * We will celebrate our Valentine's Day this Wed. Feb. 13. * Thursday, Feb. 14 is Picture Day. We will have our class picture taken that day! *Please write a note to your child and return the parent journal by Wednesday. NEXT WEEK: Math - This week students might need a little more support at home as they learn about elapsed time - or how much time passes between events. Other examples - if a movie begins at 6:15 and we live 30 min. away - what time would we need to leave the house? We will spend one more week concentrating on the 7s tables. Language Arts: In reading students will continue to examine different articles reviewing their structure, inferring implicit answers in the text, and write responses citing evidence from the text to support their answers. This will be the final week on these opinion pieces. Students will examine successful conclusions and practice writing one of their own. STEAM: We look forward to speakers from Zimbabwe talking to us on Monday about the types of schools students attend and their homes. The speakers and the book Rain School will provide valuable background knowledge for our students as they build houses with limited resources. They will also learn about the Color Wheel and decide on the importance of art even with limited resources. Also on Monday Shannon Bond will come speak to us. This is the guidance program you gave your child permission to attend. So, Monday night would be a good night for a follow up discussion to see if your child has any questions. Again, thank you for making my week so wonderful! Have a great weekend! After each child wrote Rams or Patriots on a paper football and posted it to our bar graph it is evident the class is clearly supporting a past Tritt Tiger, coach Sean McVay. The Rams were an overwhelming favorite. We'll see tonight how the newbies hang in there. What I hope for the most is that I don't hear any student tell me in the morning they got to stay up and watch the entire game! Ha!
The penguins are fabulous and are on display in the media center if you visit Tritt this week. They will come home on Friday. The use of recycled materials was creative and our class loved sharing them with our STEAM buddies on Friday. Then our buddies read us the informational books they wrote about penguins. Check out those pictures on SeeSaw. QUESTIONS TO ASK: What is point of view? Why do we take time to consider it when reading? What recycled item do you think showed the most creative use on a classmate's penguin? What are 7x7, 7x8, 7x9, and 7x10? If each student has been mastering each table as we've progressed - those are the only new facts they need to learn over the next 2 weeks. We will add the 8s, 9s, and 10s after break - adding one each week. Fluency of the facts is a standard assessed in 4th quarter and they will be ready if they are keeping up each week! REMEMBER: *There is no parent journal this week. * We will exchange Valentine's on WEDNESDAY, FEB. 13 due to Target being out on the 14th. A class list was sent home last week. * Picture day is Feb. 14 (Target students will come back to our class for this). EVEN if your child isn't buying an individual photo we will TAKE OUR CLASS PICTURE that day. *Return the green permission slip sent home by the guidance counselors if you haven't already. Thanks! NEXT WEEK: Math - It's time! Students will learn/practice telling time to the minute. 7's are added to the expectations for multiplication fact fluency. Language Arts - Students will practice the following strategy - Readers purposefully and spontaneously ask question before, during, and after reading. They will also see if their questions can be answered in the text, if they need to infer the answer from clues in the text, or research an outside source. Identifying their questions will give them insight into if their questions are ones that are making them think! In writing students have picked a final topic, supported it with 3 reasons, and are now adding details/examples to elaborate on those reasons. The writing time will be split between working on their opinion piece and learning to write a response to a reading question. Science - We will continue to travel across the regions of GA learning about each habitat's animals and plants - and what adaptations make it possible for them to thrive there. The students will also enjoy a speaker for Exceptional Children's Week and a lesson with Mrs. Grindstaff. Have a great week! It was only a four day week, but our class was learning Full Steam Ahead! We are excited about the third grade semester long recycling STEAM challenge. The students saw a video of the two young surfers who started 4Ocean -these young men saw a problem and used science, technology, engineering, art, and math to start to solve it. Check out their website! Our students want to work on that problem in their community. On Friday teams of students visited each K class to sort their recycling bin - can be recycle/can't be recycled. Ask your child what their role was - sorter(with gloves, of course), photographer, recorder or counter. On Monday we will analyze the data and decide what our next step should be to educate the K classes and help them to recycle better. Stay tuned...
QUESTIONS: What does the word "frequency" mean and how do we show it on a line plot? What is the theme of a story? How do you decide what it is? REMEMBER:* Penguins are due this Thursday, January 31. Target students may drop theirs off on the way or bring them in on Wednesday. I can't wait to see what they've made with recycled products! *IF we have snow this week please check the Cobb website, the news, Twitter, or whatever source you use instead of calling the school. In January you updated your inclement weather form. I will use that information unless you tell me otherwise. *Students should be practicing their time tables through the 6s. On Friday's check up there were many students who are not fluent yet. Call them out in the car, play card games, and make flash cards. There are many ways to practice! NEXT WEEK: Math - Students are making great progress measuring to 1/4 and 1/2 inch. We still need some practice on reading and interpreting the data on a line plot correctly. We will do that, as well as, review and assess recognizing equivalent fractions and using models to compare fractions. Language Arts - We will start to Dig Deeper into text and realize the benefits of reading a text twice to analyze the structure of the text. (Close reading) Students will decide a topic that they feel strongly about and begin to write their final opinion piece. Science - Students will begin to explore the state of Georgia's habitats - the animals and plants that live in each habitat and the adaptations that it make possible for them to survive there. Stay warm this week! |
