Every week I'm going to post some questions you can ask your child that are based on what we've studied all week. Hopefully, this will start some meaningful conversations about what they are learning.
Questions to Ask Your Child:
- What is a CAFE board and how do you use it in reading? What do the letters stand for? (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expand vocabulary)
-What is the Check for Understanding strategy? Can you model it for me when you read tonight?
(They should stop every few pages or at the end of the chapter and ask who, what, when, where, why to see if they understood what they just read.
-What is happening in James and the Giant Peach?
- Wednesday is Early Release. Lunch is at 11:30 that day, but we will still have snack. They just won't need as much.
-Please return the Performing Arts permission slip that came home this week. Even if you can't make the donation I still need the slip signed and returned, so your child can participate.
- BE INVESTED in your child's education and support the foundation!
Math - We will move from the addition strategies and on to the subtraction strategies. Learning different ways to solve a problem helps students understand (not just memorize) what they are doing.
Students need to practice their addition facts. While watching them work it is evident many have forgotten their basic facts.
Reading - Students will learn how using their prior knowledge and personal experiences will help them engage and make connections while they read.
Writing - The class will continue to write personal narratives emphasizing that they should use a storyteller's voice and not a news reporter's. They are learning to tell a story bit by bit with action, dialogue and descriptive words.
Science - This week students used Professor Peabody's Scientific Process Skills to observe, order, and classify rocks and minerals. We will continue our study of rocks and minerals this week. We will also have phase 1 of a STEM project that will be completed the following week. Look for fun pictures of that in progress in 2 weeks.
Have a great weekend.
