What a great first week back we had! Everyone in our class is being kind and respectful to each other and working together very well. If you're looking for topics to ask your child about be sure to ask about our the author we are reading, Bill Peet. Students made hilarious Wingdingdillys that they brought home on Thursday. Your child should be able to retell some of the story about how a dog wants to be a horse, but is turned into a Wingdingdilly. See if they can remember at least 3 details to tell you. Then they can explain the creature they created using wonderful imaginations.
REMINDERS: - Open House is this Thursday, August 11 at 6:00. I hope to see you all! It is a great opportunity to hear third grade expectations, procedures, schedules and a chance for me to answer some of your questions. It definitely helps us all be on the same page and work as a team. Do remember it is for parents only, thanks. - I'm still missing a few inclement weather forms(blue) and the Receipt of the Parent Information Guide that was in your Cobb County Folder. -This will be explained on Thursday night, but please initial your :child's planner each night IF they read the 20/25 minutes required for homework. THIS WEEK: Math: We will review, explore, and learn the importance of place value. Key vocabulary words are digit, place, and value. Students need to know the difference in place and value. Look for a little math homework each night. Reading: We will begin Reader's Workshop and the students will work on increasing their reading stamina and practice the first strategy - check for understanding. Writing: We will begin Writer's Workshop, explore where writers' gather their ideas. and the steps of the writing process. Social Studies/STEM: It will be a perfect week to begin our study of ancient Greece and how we got the Olympics, democracy, pottery, and architecture from them. (Yes, that is a third grade standard.) Students also need to know how to locate Greece on a map. As we launch into this study we will incorporate a STEM activity they can tell you about at the end of the week. Have a great weekend!
