We've had another great week in room 100. Ask your child about the reading salad we made and if reading requires more reading of the words or thinking about what we read. The real excitement was the day they received their 1/2 notebooks. These are just composition books cut in 1/2 by a great machine at Office Depot. After reading Amelia's Notebook we discussed how she used her notebook to journal all her ideas, feelings, and memories and writer's often use these to gather ideas for their writing pieces. Their faces were so excited and precious when they realized they were getting their own notebooks to use for journaling and doodling. This concludes our study on how writers gather ideas: 1-from their hearts (they made a map of their hearts filled with things they love); 2-from what they know (they made a hot topic list to include everything they know anything about); 3- from their observations (they took a walk through the nature nook recording all the nature they observed with their senses); 4-from their observations of what's going around them and their thoughts, feelings, and memories (we read Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street and Amelia's Notebook and they have had several times to journal). Now it time for them to turn into writers!
Reminders: -Book orders are due by Wednesday. Your child brought home the flyer with a sticker that is our class code. After you use that once you won't have to remember it again. -We would LOVE to have some DUDES volunteer to help us for our STEM Challenge day on Aug. 31 anytime from 8:15-11:00. Thanks! -If you want to volunteer for any of the Math with Parents dates I sent out, then email me by Monday. -Picture day is Wednesday. -Check out the Tritt website and updates for the great week the counselors have planned for next week! Next week: In reader's workshop the students will continue to practice using the strategy Check for Understanding - when they stop every few pages and ask themselves the 5 W questions - who, what when, where, and why. In writer's workshop they will begin writing their first personal narrative. After they pick the event they want to write about they will tell their writing buddy all the details. Children write better if they have a chance to verbalize all of their thoughts first. Hopefully, this will help them feel excited about their piece. In math we will begin reviewing the addition strategies and use them to add 3 digit numbers. In science/social studies we will continue to study rocks/minerals and introduce democracy. Have a great weekend!
