It is hard to believe it is already September and we've been in school a month! I'm so impressed by how the students already work so well together and know the expectations of third grade. Even more importantly we have lots of students learning to LOVE to read. (Don't worry - I'll keep working on the others. ) Thank you to everyone who contributed to Hats for Harvey. What a great response. It is not surprising, though. The Tritt community is always generous and thoughtful and I'm proud to be part of it. QUESTIONS TO ASK: What is the difference in a rock and a mineral? What properties do we use to identify minerals/rocks? What is schema (prior knowledge) and why did we study it during reading? We had our first meeting with our Book Buddies (Mrs. Smith's K class) today! Ask your child his/her book buddy's name and what they did together. REMINDERS: -Sept. 6-8 is CoGat testing and Sept. 11-15 is IOWA testing. Please don't add any stress to the students. If they are rested, well fed, and come in happy they will do their best. -The students did not write in their parent journals this week due to the long weekend, so no homework for you. -Thank you for remembering to sign your child's planner each night if they read their 20 min. and noting a make up time if you had a busy night. I do not check planners after a long weekend, so another break for you! NEXT WEEK: Math - We will learn how to break down 2-step word problems in addition/subtraction and explain our thinking with words. Students will have an example in their math journals to follow each night when they complete their homework. Reading - We will continue practicing making meaningful connections with text. Using our prior knowledge helps our thinking to go deeper, faster. Our class has also turned into a great group of word collectors learning that new words are interesting g and exciting . Writing: - Students chose 1 piece out of their notebooks this week to be their seed piece. They will continue to learn revision techniques to make their piece grow and sound more like a storyteller's voice and less like a news reporter's voice. Enjoy the long weekend!
